Thinking Big about Postabortion Care: Improving postabortion care and postabortion family planning through identification, prioritization, and enabling critical behaviors

Complications from miscarriage and unsafe induced abortions are a major cause of mortality or morbidity for women worldwide, particularly in low and middle-income countries. USAID and its partners have been investing resources in improving the access to and quality of postabortion care (PAC) for decades. New guidance from USAID MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership contributes to that work by leveraging lessons learned from global efforts to date by unpacking key behaviors around PAC and postabortion family planning. Specifically, the guidance pinpoints and prioritizes key actions, actors, enabling and inhibiting factors, and strategies at different levels in order to transform global PAC. For each behavior, the guidance describes pathways to change demonstrated to enable and sustain the behavior. Country programs can use this guidance to identify and resolve context-specific challenges and opportunities to promote quality PAC and postabortion family planning.

This Adaptive Learning Basic Toolkit includes a set of practical tools and approaches for designing and implementing a project or program that uses the principles of adaptive learning. An underlying assumption of this toolkit is that adaptive learning approaches are more effective when they are integrated into program design and used systematically for the purpose of program improvement, rather than as a single tool or strategy to be added to a program that otherwise uses conventional approaches.

Nutrition Quality of Care for Maternal, Newborn, Child, and Adolescent Health

MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership developed a technical brief on the nutrition components of the WHO maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health (MNCAH) Quality of Care (QoC) standards and associated policy and implementation considerations, and early learning related to implementing these nutrition standards. The primary objective of the brief is to raise awareness among nutrition and MNCAH stakeholders (country and global) of the nutrition QoC standards, and of the opportunities to apply the standards to improve the quality of integrated MNCAH and nutrition services. The brief highlights early learning from three QoC Network countries (Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Ghana) that are implementing efforts to improve the quality of integrated health and nutrition services, and outlines policy and implementation considerations for improving the quality of integrated nutrition and MNCAH services. MCGL will continue to use the brief as part of its technical and capacity development assistance efforts with a subset of countries to advance nutrition as a component of QoC efforts for women, newborns, children, and adolescents.
