MOMENTUM Safe Surgery in Family Planning and Obstetrics held a global convening, “Revitalizing and Scaling Up Postpartum and Postabortion Family Planning within Universal Health Coverage.” Presentations reviewed progress and challenges, how the pillars of universal health coverage intersect with Postpartum Family Planning/Post-abortion Family Planning, and how the maternal health and family planning communities need to come together.

Pre-service Midwifery Education in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Scoping Review

In response to a global call for more midwives, stakeholders have called for increased investment in midwifery pre-service education. Given the already long list of challenges in pre-service education, the need to prioritize investment is acute, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. This scoping review in Nurse Education in Practice, authored by staff and partners of MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership, summarizes the current peer-reviewed literature about pre-service midwifery education in sub-Saharan Africa to inform educational investments in response to the call for more midwives and WHO’s and other maternal health stakeholders call for increased investment in midwifery pre-service education.

MOMENTUM Modular Health Facility Assessment

The Modular Health Facility Assessment (HFA) and user guide provide the MOMENTUM suite of awards with a tool focusing on reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health/family planning care and services, including seven modules that collect information on the following: service availability; service readiness; quality and safety of patient care; experience of care; availability of register; community services and mobilization; health facility oversight; quality improvement; and use of data.

The State of the World’s Midwifery: A Caribbean Response

This report, supported by MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership, provides an overview of the status of core midwife workforce issues in the Caribbean region with recommendations for the continued development of midwifery. The report contains data collected from participant countries—Antigua, The Bahamas, Barbados, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago—and provides valuable data to inform next steps to shape the profession in the region. Evidence collected here indicates that although progress has been demonstrated, continued support of professional organizations, regulatory processes and educational strengthening is needed for midwifery to recover from the impacts of the COVID pandemic and to provide equitable access to health services in the region.

Policy Dialogue for Sustainable Change for Nurses and Midwives

In Ghana, India, Madagascar, and the Caribbean region, MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership works with country stakeholders to embark on a systematic, results-based policy dialogue process to strengthen and support the nursing and midwifery workforce. The process involves engaging government and other relevant stakeholders to come together and examine the country landscape regarding current policies; discuss needed adaptations to legislation, guidelines, systems, strategies, and plans; and make and implement action plans to better meet the needs of midwives, nurses, and, ultimately, the people they serve. This new multi-country brief further details the process, lessons learned, and impacts thus far from these policy dialogue processes, including the way forward.

Implementation of Task Sharing Guidelines for Long-Acting and Permanent Methods

The WHO recommendations for task sharing present categories of healthcare providers and supply guidance on what different cadres within the health system are authorized to do in relation to the provision of contraceptive information and services, as well as the contexts in which they are allowed to offer contraceptive services. This brief synthesizes key findings and recommendations to enable donors, policymakers, advocacy groups, and program implementers to address existing policy and human resources barriers to implementation and to leverage opportunities to expand the practice of task sharing.

Implementation of the World Health Organization’s Task Sharing Guidelines for Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptives and Permanent Methods across MOMENTUM Safe Surgery in Family Planning and Obstetrics Countries: Desk Review

MOMENTUM Safe Surgery in Family Planning and Obstetrics conducted this desk review between June and November 2021 to determine the extent to which implementation countries had adopted and operationalized the WHO recommendations for task sharing to increase access to high-quality FP information and services. The assessment also aimed to identify key challenges, barriers, and opportunities related to effective implementation of the WHO task sharing guidelines. The review also included an assessment of national health systems documents and global evidence, including published and grey literature on task sharing.
