Measuring and Assessing Capacity: A Landscape Review

This landscape review aims to support MOMENTUM partners' efforts to introduce, deliver, scale up, and sustain high-quality maternal, newborn, and child health services through sound capacity measurement. The review defines the different levels and types of capacity relevant to MOMENTUM that can be measured; clarifies the distinction between capacity and performance; identifies key capacity measurement tool types and assessing their general suitability for capturing different capacities relevant to MOMENTUM; and proposes promising approaches for capacity measurement, capacity indicators, and capacity measurement tool selection that reflect the operational realities of MOMENTUM partners.

Nutrition Counseling and Care During and After Childhood Illness Literature Review: Evidence from African Countries

Optimal infant and young child feeding is key for child survival, growth, and development. However, some contexts do not provide quality feeding counseling and services during sick child visits and there is a lack of information on these services surrounding common childhood illnesses in Africa. This review provides information on nutrition counseling and care during and after childhood illness in Africa, reports trends for feeding and care practices from 2005 to 2020, and investigates the practices of caregivers and health providers for nutrition counseling during and after childhood illness.

Nigeria Immunization Country Profile

Nigeria has more zero-dose children—defined as not having received the first dose of diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTP) containing vaccine—than any other country in Africa and among the most worldwide. Each year nearly 2.5 million children do not receive DTP1, and in 2020, an additional 500,000 children were unvaccinated as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Effects of Faith Actor Engagement on the Uptake and Coverage of Immunization in Low- and Middle-Income Countries

This report summarizes evidence about vaccine hesitancy trends for both COVID and non-COVID immunizations. It is a special investigation into the role of faith actors on immunization uptake in USAID priority countries for maternal, newborn, and child health and family planning/reproductive health. The report explores common themes in vaccine hesitancy relating to faith. The evidence concludes that vaccine hesitancy among faith communities threatens routine immunization coverage but also demonstrates the potential of engaging faith actors as partners to increase immunization coverage.

Radio: A Low-Tech Solution to Deliver Integrated Nurturing Care Services During COVID-19

This brief profiles how MOMENTUM adapted and scaled up an evidence-based Rwandan radio program on nurturing care called "First Steps Intera za Mbere." The program adapted to COVID-19 restrictions to respond to the urgent need created to reach caregivers with vital health information and prevention measures while also expanding the program's reach across the country. "First Steps Intera za Mbere" supports caregivers to provide nurturing care, support child development, improve learning outcomes, and increase emergent literacy promotion for children ages zero to three years old through group sessions and radio programming.
