Webinar Series | Identifying Zero-Dose Children
Published on July 17, 2023
MOMENTUM Routine Immunization Transformation and Equity is hosting a series of learning exchange webinars on “Identifying Zero-Dose Children.” Join us every one to two months for a deep dive into an approach, methodology, or topic related to estimating and identifying zero-dose children. This series is intended primarily for national and sub-national immunization professionals.
Strengthening Microplanning for Routine Immunization in Low- and Middle-Income Countries
On September 19, 2024, MOMENTUM Routine Immunization Transformation and Equity held a learning exchange webinar to discuss opportunities to strengthen microplanning for routine immunization in low- and middle-income countries. This learning exchange explored the results of a recent landscape report on microplanning for routine immunization and provided real-world microplanning examples from around the world. Presenters discussed UNICEF’s geospatial investment, as well as practical examples of geospatial approaches to routine immunization microplanning. The examples covered both challenges and lessons learned.
Exploring Zero-Dose Child Definitions and Measurement
On February 14, 2024, MOMENTUM Routine Immunization Transformation and Equity held a learning exchange webinar to discuss how countries operationalize and measure the definitions of zero-dose and under-immunized children. This learning exchange discussed the operational definition of zero-dose children, followed by experience sharing from Mozambique, Bangladesh, and DRC. Country presenters discussed the issues they faced with operationalizing the standard definition and how they are moving forward. The examples featured a range of use cases and discussion with joint problem-solving. A recording of the webinar is available below (download the transcript here and slides here).

Targeted Assessments to Identify, Reach, and Monitor Zero-Dose and Under-Immunized Children
Reducing the number of zero-dose and under-immunized children requires accurate, specific data on these populations, and managers and implementers of immunization programs are often challenged by the availability of reliable data for informed decision-making. Targeted assessments involve data collection at the household or individual level among a specific population of interest to measure vaccination coverage; understand reasons for lack of vaccination, vaccination timeliness, dropouts, and missed opportunities. On November 15, 2023, MOMENTUM Routine Immunization Transformation and Equity held a learning exchange webinar to discuss targeted assessments for identifying zero-dose and under-immunized children. The exchange focused on the use of some of these methods, including LQAS (lot quality assurance sampling) and cluster surveys, drawing from experiential knowledge from colleagues in two countries using these techniques, as well as reflections from WHO on how these approaches can be used as part of “The Big Catchup.”

Using Data Triangulation for Identifying Zero-Dose and Under-Immunized Children
Data triangulation offers an alternative route to using data to identify and estimate non-immunized, under-immunized, and zero-dose children more accurately. On August 31, 2023, MOMENTUM Routine Immunization Transformation and Equity held a webinar on the use of this approach drawing from experiential knowledge, and included a panel discussion featuring colleagues from the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

How Data Systems Can Help Identify Zero-Dose and Under-Immunized Children
Reducing the number of zero-dose and under-immunized children requires accurate, specific, and real-time data. However, to date, few immunization information systems have been designed explicitly with zero-dose children in mind. MOMENTUM Routine Immunization Transformation and Equity recently conducted a landscape analysis of existing and novel data systems that can be used to identify, monitor, and reach these children. The analysis identifies 11 primary information systems and data tools, some of which are already being used to strengthen immunization equity, while others have strong potential or require slight adaptations.
On July 12, 2023, MOMENTUM Routine Immunization Transformation and Equity held a learning exchange webinar to discuss this analysis. A recording of the webinar is available below (download the transcript here and slides here). The webinar included an in-depth exploration of the analysis by one of its authors, Allison Osterman.
