We partner with Senegal’s government and national organizations to improve women's access to safe surgeries for obstetrics and family planning.
MOMENTUM partners with the Government of Senegal and other national organizations to help more women access high-quality, voluntary, indicated, and consented safe surgeries for family planning and obstetrics. We monitor how evidence and data on safe obstetric surgeries are collected and collaborate with providers to strengthen their capacity to provide safe surgeries.
Providing Safe Obstetric Surgeries
Senegal has made significant progress in improving the health of mothers across the country. The maternal mortality ratio decreased from 392 to 236 per 100,000 live births between 2010 and 2017, and the percentage of married women of reproductive age who used any method of contraception increased from 16 percent in 2013 to 26 percent in 2017.1,2 Given that 80 percent of deliveries across the country occur in health facilities, MOMENTUM Safe Surgery in Family Planning and Obstetrics works with providers and surgical teams in Dakar, Diourbel, and Thies to strengthen their capacity to offer safe, high-quality obstetric surgeries such as cesarean deliveries and hysterectomies.3 We also work with government partners to identify and address necessary equipment and infrastructure improvements so that providers have the tools they need for safe surgeries. To complement facility-level activities, we also work with communities and health providers to help them understand the behaviors and other factors that affect safe obstetric surgeries and the risks associated with them.
Additionally, MOMENTUM Safe Surgery in Family Planning and Obstetrics partners with Senegal’s National Reproductive, Maternal, Neonatal, Infant and Adolescent Health Technical Working Group to encourage the promotion and adoption of promising global and local high-impact practices for obstetric surgeries.
Gathering Data on Safe Obstetric Surgeries and Family Planning
In Dakar, Diourbel, and Thies, MOMENTUM Safe Surgery in Family Planning and Obstetrics is reviewing the national evidence and data on safe obstetric surgery and family planning to help strengthen monitoring systems so more Senegalese mothers and babies can access high-quality health care. We also help adapt the World Health Organization’s Surgical Safety Checklist to improve surgical monitoring and clinical reviews and help referral hospitals better manage follow-up systems for safe obstetric care.
