Integrated Technical Organizational Capacity Assessment (ITOCA) for MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership

The Integrated Technical and Organizational Capacity Assessment (ITOCA) methodology is founded in Pact’s decades of experience and research on organizational capacity assessments, aligns with USAID’s Non-US Pre-Award Survey (NUPAS) to take regular measurements to support an organization’s long-term sustainability, and was developed in partnership with each of the relevant MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership technical team leads to ensure alignment with global standards and best practices.

Pre-service Midwifery Education in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Scoping Review

In response to a global call for more midwives, stakeholders have called for increased investment in midwifery pre-service education. Given the already long list of challenges in pre-service education, the need to prioritize investment is acute, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. This scoping review in Nurse Education in Practice, authored by staff and partners of MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership, summarizes the current peer-reviewed literature about pre-service midwifery education in sub-Saharan Africa to inform educational investments in response to the call for more midwives and WHO’s and other maternal health stakeholders call for increased investment in midwifery pre-service education.

Supply Chain Capacity Strengthening Program for Faith-based Drug Supply Organizations

In Cameroon, Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, and Uganda, MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership partnered with eight faith-based drug supply organizations to strengthen and reinforce their resiliency and improve the availability of high-quality and affordable family planning (FP) and maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH) commodities. This report shares the result of these efforts, including more effective management and execution in procurement and supply planning and agility in mitigating disruptions from external forces, such as the effects of COVID-19.

USAID COVID-19 Implementing Partners Forum Mini-Conference Report

The USAID COVID-19 Vaccine Technical Assistance Implementing Partners (IPs) Forum is a platform for bi-directional sharing of updates, experiences, and ideas, aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of USAID's COVID-19 investments.  MOMENTUM Routine Immunization Transformation and Equity serves as the technical lead on the IP Forum secretariat working closely with USAID and Data.FI. Considering the evolving context of the pandemic and the approaching conclusion of the IP Forum, our final learning exchange was a hybrid mini-conference held on July 19, 2023, in Washington D.C. The theme of the mini-conference was "Sustaining and Applying COVID-19 Innovations for Primary Health Care and Routine Immunization". This theme examined the numerous lessons learned from diverse innovations developed during the pandemic, and how these valuable insights can be applied to shape our future and strengthen primary health care and routine immunization programs.

This evidence brief discusses the importance of strengthening performance accountability in immunization programs to enhance their effectiveness and reach zero-dose and under-immunized children, especially in the context of post-COVID-19 recovery. Performance accountability is critical in improving immunization programs' outcomes and provides a roadmap for stakeholders to enhance accountability relationships and achieve better immunization coverage.

Counseling, Informed Consent, and Debriefing for Cesarean Section in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Scoping Review

Counseling as part of the informed consent process is a prerequisite for cesarean section. Postnatal debriefing allows women to explore their cesarean section with their healthcare providers. This scoping review in the International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, authored by staff from MOMENTUM Safe Surgery in Family Planning and Obstetrics, shares practices and experiences of counseling and debriefing, the barriers and facilitators to informed consent for cesarean section, and documents the effectiveness of the interventions used to improve informed consent found in the peer-reviewed literature.

Assessment of Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) Cross-Cutting Themes in Ghana, Malawi, and Sierra Leone

In 2022, MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership undertook a multi-country qualitative assessment of the successes of, challenges to, and opportunities for effective implementation of Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) through multi-level consultations and interviews with health workers, facility and district administrators, and health system leaders in Ghana, Malawi, and Sierra Leone. This comprehensive report of results from all three countries will help critically inform a global reinvigoration of the IMCI strategy which, despite having been launched more than 25 years ago, still has not reached programmatic scale in many of the countries where this proven approach could have a big impact on child survival.
