Togo

We partnered with the Government of Togo and local civil society organizations to make high-quality voluntary family planning services more available and accessible, especially in urban and suburban areas.

MOMENTUM is partnering with nearly 40 countries to accelerate progress and advance USAID’s work to save lives and improve health outcomes for women, children, families, and communities in all of their diversity. MOMENTUM brings together specialized technical and country expertise through six distinct yet integrated awards with the depth and breadth of experience to spur reductions in maternal, newborn, and child mortality and morbidity.

From August 2021 to March 2023, MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership worked with local civil society organizations and the Ministry of Health to improve voluntary family planning and reproductive health services in the Grand-Lomé and Plateaux regions of Togo. We supported local communities to reach more people with high-quality services.

Expanding Family Planning and Reproductive Health Services In Urban and Suburban Areas

Fewer than one in five Togolese women living in urban and suburban areas uses a modern contraceptive method.1 From August 2021 to March 2023, MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership partnered with local civil society organizations, the Ministry of Health, and local health authorities to deliver community-based family planning and reproductive health services to urban and suburban areas in the Golfe and Ogou districts. We sent personnel into communities to provide counseling, distribute contraception, and refer individuals for needed care at health facilities. Our community-based approach focused on youth and adolescents, who are less likely to have access to services. In addition, we worked with local partners and the national government to explore opportunities to use the private sector to further expand family planning services.

Supporting Civil Society to Provide Family Planning Services

MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership partnered with four Togolese civil society organizations to assess their organizational and technical capacity for family planning services and build on their expertise and leadership. With these partners, we co-developed change action plans using the Integrated Technical and Organizational Capacity Assessment (ITOCA) tool to identify quick fixes and longer-term investments to  improve family planning services in their communities.
