Côte d’Ivoire
We work with the Ministry of Health, local partners, and communities in Côte d’Ivoire to build upon existing systems to improve the quality of maternal and newborn health and voluntary family planning services—especially for vulnerable women and girls.
In Côte d’Ivoire, MOMENTUM works with local community partners and health facility staff to expand high-quality maternal and newborn health services and voluntary family planning at clinics and in communities across 48 health districts. Our programs focus on vulnerable groups, such as adolescents and young first-time parents, who may fall through the cracks of traditional health approaches.
Increasing Quality of Health Care for Mothers and Babies
In general, reliably measuring and monitoring the quality of health services for women and newborns can be challenging. To address this issue, MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership collaborates with regional and quality improvement staff to train, coach, and supervise personnel who provide primary health care in 48 of Côte d’Ivoire’s 86 health districts. MOMENTUM works with health staff through hands-on training and coaching to strengthen their ability to deliver respectful and person-centered care that meets their clients’ specific needs and expectations safely, effectively, efficiently, and in a timely and equitable manner. This work will focus on respectful care for vulnerable groups, including adolescents and young first-time mothers.

Making it Easier for Ivoirians to Access Contraception
Ivoirian men and women access contraception from government facilities, non-governmental organizations, or private providers. However, a full range of modern contraceptive methods is not always available at all of these facilities, making it difficult for some women, men, and couples to access family planning when and how they need it.1 MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership collaborates with private clinics and pharmacies and partners with civil society organizations to improve and adapt voluntary family planning and reproductive health services. MOMENTUM also works with partners to improve community and provider attitudes about contraception (which are often a barrier to use), make a wide range of contraceptive methods available at more locations, and increase access to innovative “self-care” approaches to contraception, such as self-injectable contraception and the contraceptive vaginal ring.

Addressing Social Barriers to Wellbeing
Little is known about the social and economic barriers that make it harder for Ivoirian women and families to access the health services they need. Using the Social Norms Exploration Tool from the Institute for Reproductive Health at Georgetown University, MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership will partner with communities to research the gender and social norms that limit the use of voluntary family planning and maternal and newborn health services. This work will focus on vulnerable groups, such as adolescents and young first-time parents. MOMENTUM will use this research to create activities for couples’ communication, adolescent health, and increased demand for services.
