New MOMENTUM-led Global Survey Provides Comprehensive Look at National Efforts to Prevent Postpartum Hemorrhage and Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy

Published on May 4, 2023

At the 2023 International Maternal Newborn Health Conference, MOMENTUM is launching a global survey providing an updated, comprehensive look at the state of national programs for postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) around the globe.

PPH and HDP remain two of the three leading direct causes of maternal death in low- and middle-income countries.

In 2022, USAID, with support from MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership and MOMENTUM Private Healthcare Delivery and their multiple partners, surveyed national programs working to reduce maternal and newborn mortality from PPH and PPH HDP. From January to May 2022, 31 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and Latin America, and the Caribbean completed a 69-question survey on national PPH and HDP policies and practices in the public and private sectors.

This ambitious global survey is the first of its kind in a decade, and since several important technical updates on global guidance for preventing and managing PPH and HDP.

The resulting country-by-country snapshot of policies, practices, supplies, and activities can guide national and global program managers and policy-makers in setting national priorities to more effectively manage their programs and help to address the stubbornly high burden of preventable maternal deaths due to PPH and HDP.

The report highlights the implications of the survey findings on national policies, guidelines, capacity building and training, midwife scope of practice, strengthening information systems, programs, and future research. The report calls on countries to increase public-private partnerships, strengthen governance, address remaining quality of care and equity gaps, and strengthen health systems.
