The Power of Youth Voices: How Youth Are Holding Their Health Systems Accountable for Family Planning and Reproductive Health

MOMENTUM identified challenges to youth social accountability related to youth participation, health system responsiveness, and an over-emphasis on short-term project-based accountability compared with sustainable youth-led movement building. Promising practices for youth social accountability emerging from the landscape include capacity building for youth and adults, strengthening relationships between youth and health system actors, leveraging digital connectedness, and targeting accountability efforts at multiple levels of the health system. Through this landscape analysis, we found that youth social accountability implementation is racing ahead of documentation and that there are opportunities to improve youth social accountability practice in order to increase youth leadership and improve the responsiveness of health systems to the needs and rights of youth.

Meeting the Contraceptive Needs of Youth Through Digital Tools: Reaching Beninese Youth Where They Are

MOMENTUM Private Healthcare Delivery aims to improve youth access to reliable sexual and reproductive health (SRH) information with digital tools. With youth input, MOMENTUM designed an SRH-focused chatbot, Tata Annie, to meet the needs of youth in Benin and to provide confidential, on-demand SRH information. This program brief outlines the key design elements and adaptations made for the digital tool, including how MOMENTUM leveraged trainings and support from Meta to promote the chatbot.

Partnering with Youth for Impact: Profiles of MOMENTUM Youth Partners from Across the Globe

This document profiles some of MOMENTUM’s dynamic youth partners working across different geographies and contexts in South Asia and West and East Africa. These partners aim to increase health knowledge and demand for health services, shift social and gender norms in their communities, improve access to quality health services, and create adolescent-responsive systems across the humanitarian-development nexus.

Strengthening Youth-led Family Planning and Reproductive Health Initiatives

This brief highlights the lessons learned from a collaboration with youth from the International Youth Alliance for Family Planning (IAYFP). From August 2020 to January 2021, MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership collaborated with IYAFP to strengthen the capacity of three IYAFP country focal points—located in Kenya and Malawi—to plan and implement COVID-19-responsive, youth-led family planning and reproductive health initiatives. IYAFP is a global, youth-led organization dedicated to advancing sexual and reproductive health, human rights, and justice for youth, by youth. This brief shares the lessons learned from the collaboration as well as recommendations for future engagement.

Youth-Led Social Accountability for Health

This interactive report summarizes the activities, learnings, and impacts of a partnership between MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership and two youth-led organizations (YLOs) to advance youth-led social accountability learning and practice. With MOMENTUM organizational and technical capacity development assistance, Youth Advocacy on Rights and Opportunities (YARO) in Ghana and Youth for Sustainable Development (YSD) in Kenya led social accountability activities to improve the quality of adolescent and youth sexual and reproductive health (AYSRH) services and to conduct learning exercises to contribute to the global evidence on youth-led social accountability.

Collaborating, Learning, and Adapting Tools for Youth Social Accountability

This suite of tools can be used by young people and their allies to facilitate youth-led social accountability coupled with methods to promote collaboration, learning, and adaptation. MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership adapted these tools with Youth for Sustainable Development (YSD) and Youth Advocacy on Rights and Opportunities (YARO) as part of our work on youth-led social accountability in Kenya and Ghana. These versions of the tools can be adapted and used by other young people in their own youth-led social accountability work.

Meaningful Adolescent and Youth Engagement and Partnership in Sexual and Reproductive Health Programming: A Strategic Planning Guide

High Impact Practices (HIPs) are a set of evidence-based family planning practices vetted by experts against specific criteria and documented in an easy-to-use format. MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership supported the International Youth Alliance for Family Planning, a youth-led organization, to develop a HIPs Strategic Planning Guide intended to lead program managers, planners, and decision-makers through a strategic process to meaningfully and effectively engage and partner with adolescents, youth, and/or youth-led organizations on sexual and reproductive health programs and initiatives.

Putting Meaningful Adolescent and Youth Engagement into Practice in Sexual and Reproductive Health Programming

Meaningful Adolescent and Youth Engagement (MAYE) is an inclusive, intentional, mutually respectful partnership between youth and adults used as an approach to design and implement SRH programs. This report captures MOMENTUM Private Healthcare Delivery’s experience implementing MAYE in Malawi to meet demand for contraception among young people.
