Assessment Findings for Improving the Participation of Family Planning Private Sector Providers in Health Care Provider Networks in the Provinces of Antique and Guimaras, Philippines

This technical report summarizes the results of field assessments undertaken by MOMENTUM Private Healthcare Delivery in 2021, which will help improve private health provider participation in family planning service delivery. This report guides health sector actors in the Philippines and offers lessons learned for global audiences considering health financing mechanisms similar to the healthcare provider networks found in the Philippines.

Engaging for Impact: Strengthening Private Sector Participation in Public Purchasing for Increased Access to Family Planning in the Philippines

On June 15, 2023, MOMENTUM Private Healthcare Delivery hosted a webinar with partners ThinkWell and the Integrated Midwives Association of the Philippines (IMAP) to share how the project has unlocked private sector capacity to expand access to family planning (FP) in the Philippines. The Philippines has made significant progress in expanding access to FP services in recent years, but coverage remains uneven, particularly for long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs). Since 2021, MOMENTUM Private Healthcare Delivery has supported the IMAP to strengthen private FP provider capacities and participation in these networks, resulting in locally-led solutions co-designed by the public and private sectors. The webinar shared highlights from MOMENTUM’s work and provided global lessons for sustainable private sector engagement in family planning.

The Impact of COVID-19 on Contraceptive Supplies Through Private Sector Pharmacies: Analysis of Data from Brazil, Côte d’Ivoire, and the Philippines

The private sector plays a key role in delivering family planning (FP) services in many countries, and to date, the impact of COVID-19 on private sector FP services has been relatively unknown. Analysis in this report provides a snapshot of how global shocks like COVID-19 affect local sales of contraceptives in the private sector by using retail pharmacy data collected by IQVIA. The report highlights data from private sector family planning markets in Brazil, Cote d'Ivoire, and the Philippines.

Private Sector Engagement to Boost Reach of Immunization Programs

This brief introduces key issues on private sector engagement (PSE) for immunization service delivery in the context of COVID-19 vaccine rollout. It is part of broader work by MOMENTUM Private Healthcare Delivery to distill the evidence and outline the potential for PSE to increase the uptake of immunization in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where immunization resources are constrained.

Leveraging the Private Sector in Urban Uganda: Promising Pathways for Uptake of Postpartum Family Planning

In partnership with the Uganda Private Midwives Association (UPMA), MOMENTUM Private Healthcare Delivery combined a supply-side intervention—training and support for UPMA providers— with demand-side activities using human-centered design (HCD), to improve demand for, and uptake of postpartum family planning (PPFP). This brief describes the intervention and results of using demand creation prototypes to improve demand and use of PPFP. The brief is intended for FP program implementers seeking experiences of using HCD for PPFP demand creation in the private sector.

Boosting Immunization Reach through Private Sector Engagement

On October 13, 2021, MOMENTUM Private Healthcare Delivery convened experts from the MOMENTUM suite of awards, USAID India, implementing partners from South Africa and Kenya, the World Health Organization, and other partners for a webinar to discuss how the private sector can be leveraged to reach more people with routine immunizations and COVID-19 vaccinations. Opening remarks from USAID’s Immunization Team Lead, Folake Olayinka, highlighted the agency’s diverse portfolio of immunization programming over the past 30 years and invited attendees to think about new and effective ways to engage the private sector to support immunization goals and extend equitable access to life-saving vaccines for all.

Person-Centered Family Planning Counseling in the Private Sector

MOMENTUM uses the Counseling for Choice (C4C) approach to support providers in providing respectful, person-centered care. This brief describes MOMENTUM’s experience implementing C4C in Uganda, Niger, Mali, Cote d’Ivoire, and Ghana, and shares lessons around adaptations, effectiveness and scalability of the approach.

What’s on the Table? Rapid Landscape Review of Challenges to Successful Engagement of Private Family Planning Providers in Public Purchasing Schemes

MOMENTUM Private Healthcare Delivery is supporting and strengthening private sector providers’ capacity to sustainably integrate and participate in public purchasing programs, including for family planning services. Led by ThinkWell, MOMENTUM has conducted a rapid landscape review that identifies the common barriers for private providers when engaging in public purchasing programs. The landscape draws on literature from across 23 countries and presents opportunities and recommendations to address private health provider challenges in engagement and collaboration within the public health sector.
