Factors Associated with Uptake and Use of Immunization Toolkits and Guidance

Immunization-related resources, such as toolkits and guidance, are designed to address critical technical components of immunization activities. Resource designers and implementers may benefit from additional information to identify strategies to support uptake and use of the resource—including implementation best practices. As a work plan activity in the 2023 project year, MOMENTUM Routine Immunization Transformation and Equity examined existing immunization-related toolkits and guidance to identify opportunities to improve uptake and use. As a foundational step to help the project prepare for these activities, the Measurement, Adaptive Learning and Knowledge Management Lab (MAKLab) for MOMENTUM conducted a desk review of relevant gray and published literature and conducted key informant interviews to identify known facilitators and barriers to the uptake and use of immunization-related resources. The analysis primarily focused on implementation of immunization-related resources, but non-immunization resources were considered if the type of resource, user, or use was similar to the immunization context. Findings from the desk review and interviews were synthesized into a list of factors associated with uptake and use of immunization-related toolkits and guidance.

Advancing Local Solutions and Innovations for Lasting Impact: Applying Strategies for COVID-19 Vaccination to Routine Immunization

On December 6, 2023, the Wilson Center’s Maternal Health Initiative, in collaboration with MOMENTUM Routine Immunization Transformation and Equity, held an event to share best practices and innovations used to achieve high equitable coverage of COVID-19 vaccination and reach hard-to-reach priority populations, and how they could be applied to routine immunization. The event focused on key themes such as community engagement to promote vaccine confidence and improve accessibility, strategies for reaching priority populations, partnerships between government and NGOs, strengthening data availability and use for decision-making, and adapting supply chain management to meet the needs of new vaccines. Speakers discussed opportunities for applying these strategies to routine immunization, and what is needed to facilitate that transition.

Gender and Immunization: Opportunities for Action

The global immunization community has only recently recognized that gender-related barriers lie on a critical pathway to achieving high and equitable vaccination coverage.1 As part of its commitment to advancing this knowledge base, in the summer of 2022, MOMENTUM Routine Immunization Transformation and Equity developed a four-session month long course entitled “Gender and Immunization: Opportunities for Action.” The overall goal of the course was to provide national and sub-national participants from low-and middle-income countries with the knowledge, tools, skills, capacity, and confidence to reduce gender barriers to immunization and document their efforts to advance this nascent and critical technical area. The course was held on the Sabin Vaccine Institute’s Boost learning platform. The following gender course materials are meant to serve as a practical reference to help inform and guide the work of immunization professionals in LMICs, global health students, program implementers, and policy makers interested in gender mainstreaming in immunization.

COVID-19 to Routine Immunization Information System Transferability Assessment (CRIISTA)

The COVID-19 pandemic and vaccine introduction led many countries to invest in new immunization information systems (IISs) to collect, manage, and use COVID-19 vaccination data. Many countries have recognized these investments as a potential opportunity for strengthening routine IISs. The COVID-19 to Routine Immunization Information System Transferability Assessment (CRIISTA) aims to facilitate a thorough process for collecting and reviewing relevant information to support decision-making around whether it is appropriate to scale a COVID-19 IIS, or parts of it, for use in routine immunization.

Harnessing the Power of the Pandemic Response to Take Immunization into a New Era

On April 26, 2023, MOMENTUM Routine Immunization Transformation and Equity held a webinar about lessons learned from India and Kenya during the pandemic and how they can be applied to routine immunization. In the webinar, government officials from India discussed bringing equitable COVID-19 vaccination to vulnerable and hard-to-reach populations using community engagement and working through local non-governmental organizations. Additionally, panelists spoke about Kenya’s immunization program and what measures were taken to keep immunization coverage from dropping during the pandemic, including new strategies to improve equity and life course vaccination were implemented.
