Leveraging the Private Sector in Urban Uganda: Promising Pathways for Uptake of Postpartum Family Planning

In partnership with the Uganda Private Midwives Association (UPMA), MOMENTUM Private Healthcare Delivery combined a supply-side intervention—training and support for UPMA providers— with demand-side activities using human-centered design (HCD), to improve demand for, and uptake of postpartum family planning (PPFP). This brief describes the intervention and results of using demand creation prototypes to improve demand and use of PPFP. The brief is intended for FP program implementers seeking experiences of using HCD for PPFP demand creation in the private sector.

MOMENTUM Projects in East Africa: Regional Reference Brief

Ensuring the Delivery of Essential Health Services During the COVID-19 Pandemic: An Infection Prevention and Control Readiness Response in Five Countries

COVID-19 significantly disrupted health systems, creating a need to assess both assets and gaps to prioritize immediate infection prevention risks and the needs of health care facilities. Developed by MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership, this report details the project's implementation of an infection prevention and control (IPC) COVID-19 activity in Bangladesh, Ghana, India, Sierra Leone, and Uganda. The annex of the report, a COVID-19 Readiness Toolkit, is also available for download.

Person-Centered Family Planning Counseling in the Private Sector

MOMENTUM uses the Counseling for Choice (C4C) approach to support providers in providing respectful, person-centered care. This brief describes MOMENTUM’s experience implementing C4C in Uganda, Niger, Mali, Cote d’Ivoire, and Ghana, and shares lessons around adaptations, effectiveness and scalability of the approach.

Supply Chain Capacity Strengthening Program for Faith-based Drug Supply Organizations

In Cameroon, Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, and Uganda, MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership partnered with eight faith-based drug supply organizations to strengthen and reinforce their resiliency and improve the availability of high-quality and affordable family planning (FP) and maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH) commodities. This report shares the result of these efforts, including more effective management and execution in procurement and supply planning and agility in mitigating disruptions from external forces, such as the effects of COVID-19.

Postpartum Hemorrhage Community of Practice: Manual Techniques for PPH

On June 22, 2023, the MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership-led Postpartum Hemorrhage Community of Practice held a webinar on Physical Techniques to Treat PPH, facilitated by Dr. Andrew Weeks. Speakers from South Africa, Norway, and Uganda presented on uterine compression techniques, external aortic compression, and the REBOA technique.

Improving Facility Readiness in Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) And Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) In Uganda

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic shocked health systems, demanding the urgent identification and prioritization of immediate health care facility needs. Beginning in August 2020, USAID’s MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership provided rapid technical and capacity development assistance to local health networks in Uganda and four other countries to improve facility readiness in water sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and infection prevention and control (IPC). This package of materials details the impact and outcomes of this work, as well as lessons learned to inform future WASH and IPC efforts in health care facilities and quality improvement programming.

Investment Case for Integrated Community Case Management (iCCM) of Childhood Illnesses in Uganda

MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership collaborated with the Uganda Ministry of Health to develop a national “Investment Case for Integrated Community Case Management (iCCM) of Childhood Illnesses in Uganda.” The Investment Case provides the Government of Uganda and development partners with clear financing requirements and impact projection justifying continued investments to ensure institutionalization of sustainable, accessible, and equitable iCCM services at scale. Using the Community Health Planning and Costing Tool (CHPCT 2.0), this investment case costs the scale-up of iCCM over a five-year period and identifies a resource mobilization strategy to address a substantial total funding gap, estimated at US$0.8 per capita per year.

On June 8, 2022, MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership convened a webinar to learn about and discuss successes, challenges, and recommendations from their work providing rapid technical and capacity development assistance to local health networks in Bangladesh, Ghana, India, Sierra Leone, and Uganda during the COVID-19 pandemic. Presenters highlighted MOMENTUM’s use of virtual capacity strengthening processes and tools, open-source digital data collection platforms, and local partnerships.

Promising Practices for Engaging Local Faith Actors to Promote Uptake of COVID-19 Vaccination: Lessons Learned from Ghana, Indonesia, Sierra Leone, and Uganda

This report summarizes evidence about engaging local faith actors to promote uptake of COVID-19 vaccination. It is a special investigation into lessons learned from four countries: Ghana, Indonesia, Sierra Leone, and Uganda. The report explores 15 promising practices for increasing vaccine uptake through strategic engagement of faith actors. The Policy Brief, “Promising Practices for Engaging Local Faith Actors to Promote Uptake of COVID-19 Vaccination: Lessons Learned from Four Countries,” provides an 8-page synopsis of the lessons outlined in the report.
